  1. You got that right. Looks like a bunch "jumpin'ship" before it sinks.Whoever is left of the council needs to make sure that no "lump sums" are paid out to those (staff) departing. Noone i see is deserving of any severance pay.The attorney olsen just needs to be cut off right now. I am sure if a professional board were to review his performance in serving the Tribe...he would end up OWING money. All the attorneys/lobbyists the tribe hired and paid exorbitant amounts of money to..make me sick. I have always warned about (outside/white) lawyers. Let's hope this type of hiring never happens again. Lawyers are the main reason we are in this mess right now. They encouraged/endorsed all the bad behavior that has occurred. Keep up the good and informational blog. Talofa lava

  2. wait a minute. you are referring to the Donald that took advantage of an adult with diminished mental capacity while the ICWA consultant for the tribe? the same Donald that was entrusted in "helping" members of the tribe, only to do unspeakable things to another tribal member?

surely you cannot recommend an individual of such character?

i look thru this blog and like the fact that it gives people a place to vent and discuss our tribal politics....one thing that i notice is the lack of discussion on the hiring and firing practices of the casino.....over the years i have sat and watched as our council did nothing to protect the rights of our own people. We need to take back our casino and punish those who tend to pick on indian people..the point systen they have in place now seems to be geared at our people. The biggest indian hater and abuser seems to me to be Renetta "youngbear" Plander....this woman has to go.....she has indian blood but she seems to hate it..although she has no qualms about benefitting from her status....why is she in there anyway....i thought she tested positive for drugs and a few monthes later a position was created for her..a supervisory one at that....if it was a real indian..this would not happen.....its ok for indians to be dishwashers and what not and i for one am tired of watching all this go on...and our tribal council does nothing...for the next tribal council this should be a priority..if you want heads to roll....start there......the human resources director is also an indian hater as is the food and beverage director..i call her two face mary...these people need to be sent on the road......good fucking bye and good riddance....whoever runs for council and wins.....have the balls to stand up for our people.....promote indians not whites and breeds who hate us........what do you all think about this..at one time or another..you all probably had relation who had issues with these indian hating people.......TIME TO STOP THE WHITE GRAVY TRAIN AND TAKE OUR CASINO BACK..THIS OUR LAND...THIS OUR MONEY.....WE SHOUJLD BE IN CHARGE AND WE SHOULD RULE OUR OWN DESTINY...PROTECT OUR CHILDREN......THERE OUR ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE WORKING THERE..BLACKS,,MEXICANS,,PURPLE PEOPLE AND WHAT NOT....AND SOME OF US INDIANS CANT GET HIRED AROUND HERE.....WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT.........WE NEED A COUNCIL WHO WILL PROTECT AND PROMOTE MESKWAKI'S.....STOP THE ASS KISSING AND FAVOR MONGORING.......LET THE INDIAN HATING HEADS ROLL......SIGNED TIRED OF WATCHING NATIVE ABUSE

  4. speaking of cleaning house...the ex-exucutive director is suing the tribe...wow..some kinda attitude..AND the tribal attorneys will not defend the tribe who pays them because of "conflict of interest"?? WOW!! lemme know please what the hell is going on here? WE pay them to work for US and now they say they won't work for us? Hmmmm? somenone is up into some shit we all don't know about..i have long said that that lawyers will screw us indians in the end...and here we go...yahooo!!!... bring it on!! more later..

Seeing that this post is at the top of the page, I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I, Dirk Whitebreast, am currently campaigning and am seeking a seat on our tribal council in the fall(Oct./Nov.). I'm not going to outline any sort of agenda here on the Tattle but if you would like to contact me, please feel free to do so via the following...

    641-740-7139 (call/text)
    dw641@hotmail.com
    myspace.com/dw641 (add me)
    twitter.com/dw641 (follow me)

I've spoken with several community members thus far and have received a fair amount of encouragement and support. I made my 1st public announcement last week(7/30) at the seniors birthday lunch. My decision to run for council seemed well received amongst the elders and has given me the drive and motivation to push forward with this endeavor.

Meskwakis, I am prepared to serve the people with honor and respect. We all must play a role in bringing this community back together. I believe our future is bright and I look forward to seeing the positivity that each of you possess shine thru. We can do it! We will do it! We control our destiny. The time to act is now.

I will make myself as available as I can. Please, do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing from and meeting with you soon. Take care.

    DW

I apologize, my # is 750-7139, not 740. Since posting about my candidacy I have received a few emails and texts. Thank you for the support & encouragement. Let's keep this momentum going all the way to fall elections.

Enjoy the pow-wow. Have a good weekend...

Dirk, first off, congratulations on having the courgage to run for council. No pun intended, since you do run marathons by the dozens!!

Second, don't let it get to your head like some past councilman and start ignoring people and not being friendly to the people that you represent.

Third, don't kiss the lawyers' asses, remember they work for the tribe and not the other way around. I can still see and hear past (and current)councilman laughing at every word that came out of Mr.Olsen's mouth, while ignoring tribal members that were around.

Finally, be fair to everyone. Not just the ones who support you, but everyone.

    Good luck!!

We are in the mizzed of having a whole new council, at least the people hopes too...we need a council that has balls to do the right thing for the people. This is our land, our casino, our trading post and our health clinic. We need to really look at them and the new council need to put forth a night for casino business, a night for trading post, a night for health issues and a night for other issues as I have been too meetings and things don't really get done. We have people who rather hire white people over our own people. We must protect our people from being thrown out of places of where they can work. Let's find people who will REALLY WORK FOR PEOPLE!! It is hard to be on council because you have too have a strong will to serve the people.

  12. Anonymous25.9.09

As I see the things going on here on the settlement....we must get rid of the people who only take their meskwaki blood for their own gain and then treat meskwakis bad and give white people rewards. These type of people need to be taken off the enrollment rolls as they prefer to be white.

  14. Hey anonymous..good to see someone is thinking about the elections. I was wondering about that..Kinda near. Maybe you can take charge of this thing and make some noise. I hear there are some candidates out there who owuld probably like a forum to voice their concerns. I tried to get the Council to set up a "Candidate's Forum" so that tribal members could see and hear the potential electees BEFORE the elections. No one responded. Hmmmm...wonda why?? Oh well..maybe if we get the word out..then folks might start talkking on this blog..it ain't much..but at least it's a place to hear some things...we'll see..

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous26.9.09

I have a feeling that no matter who gets elected,it will be the same thing but different people. We have read things from Dirk Whitebreast(Roberts) but I have a feeling he will be working on his own agenda since his family got screwed over twice. Think about it. Just like other's before him...."elect me and I will help the people" until they are elected they see the people but after they get into office they forget the people. History repeats itself only with different people. We need people who really care about the tribe and are willing to do something about the ones who are only half meskwaki and enrolled but they treat the enrolled members really bad and promote the white people to better positions. Just my thoughts!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't know Anonymous, Dirk is a new face to tribal politics, but is what you are assuming correct? Should we trust only the ones already proven to be for special interests? I have listened to Dirk and he really does have good ideas. I really think we need good honest change in our leadership and Dirk and seems a likely candidate. Oh, i could 'assume" this or that, but i would rather give a new guy a chance to show what he can do. In talking to him, he really does seem to care about all the people. plus..and this may not seem a qualifier..he is a runner of marathons. To me that means he finishes what he starts. We need people who are committed and dedicated and will follow through. Any other names out there?

  17. To: Meskwaki Membership

I, Troy Wanatee am running for tribal council this October elections. I believe with your support we can make a change for the better. I am 49 yrs old and married for 28 yrs with no criminal record. I have never been on the tribal council, but my father the late Gailey Wanatee who has been on the tribal council for 26 yrs has given me knowledge. I, Troy Wanatee will bring a fresh new beginning and ambition to succeed.

List of what I will achieve for you.
    • Forensic Audit of the Casino and tribal operations with results to be addressed to the tribal membership by the Independent Auditors.
    • Cut unnecessary spending.
    • Run a more efficient and transparent tribal government.
    • Eliminate current Tribal Codes and simplify any new rules without the need for an attorney to interpret.
    • Create more jobs for tribal members and if not qualified training will be provided.
    • Create a more pro-active Higher Education Program and eliminate any deadlines to file to go to school, and fast track financial aid without the red tape.

All major spending or costly projects will require your (tribal membership) approval by way of a referendum vote.

Also, as the lead petitioner in the Per Cap Referendum it is my desire and duty if elected to the tribal council to uphold the results of the referendum and increase your per capita payments as directed by majority vote of the Meskwaki Tribe.

Before we can proceed with positive changes I need your help on Friday October 9, 2009 I need you to be at the Nominations at 6:30 pm.

Nominations are done by secret ballot, so no one will know how you vote.
Its simple. Its only one night. You can change tribal government.

Only you can make change for the better for years to come. Don’t second guess you participation. Join us. If you’re 21 yrs old and enrolled Meskwaki member and residing on the Meskwaki Settlement or have resided on Meskwaki Settlement than you’re eligible to nominate candidates and vote.

See you on Friday October 9, 2009 at 6:30 pm at the tribal offices/gym.

  18. Good to hear you Troy. I know I am not alone in saying that we were waiting for another "new" face to get into the tribal council electoral processes. You make several good points. Firstly, the idea of a forensic audit of the casino. That would be something all tribal members all will look forward to. Finally we will be able to see what has been going on in the casino. I also like the idea of the higher education "pro-activation". I am assuming that would encourage more tribal members to seek an education beyond high school. Plus with the elimination of red tape, more tribal members will be able to seek higher education without all the hassles that are in place now. I hope there are many members out there that will stand up and help you make these necessary changes. Maybe some one will take notice and you or Dirk or whoever wants to run can convince the tribal council to hold an open "candidate's forum" so's the rest of the tribe can hear you folks and what you guys have to offer. Seems like the majority of members do not come to this site to see what is happening. Keep going-moving forward.

As I read all the things put forth in this blog, I see that some people are blinded by the fact of new faces in the council. I am an on looker from the outside seeing things that no one is. You say that just because some one runs marathons and finishes does not mean this person does not have an agenda. An agenda that may seem like for the good of the people but deep inside larks a shark who is ready to strike back on behalf of his family. If you know what I mean. Things have been long time a coming, such as rumor has it that a certain family had dna done on 2 of their siblings and found out that one of them should not be enrolled but still is?? Why?? Rewriting the enrollement rules from long ago just so some of they own can be enrolled for the money is not right either. Elders say that the father should be the only one too sign and if the father did not sign for a child to be enrolled should not over turned by greed. Just a thought...as I said, I am an looker and listner from the outside and hear from all sides of the old ways.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous said "You say that because someone runs marathons and finishes does not mean that this person does not have an agenda". Hmmmm..I see I mentioned that Dirk runs marathons..but I NEVER said what your statement implies. ALL people have an agenda..we should hope so. If YOU want to say that a certain person has a BAD or UNDESIRABLE agenda then that is what you see. I was merely pointing out that the running of marathons reflect a certain type of character. I suggest you pay better attention to what you are reading. While you would like to cast certain aspersions on a persons capability or character and honesty, (hidden agenda) I suggest we leave all that negative stuff out of the picture UNLESS of course there is proof of the accusations. Of course i am only suggesting. You and anyone else is free to comment as they please. There is much legitimate concern as you are aware of enrollment practices..AND other rule changes as Troy made clear in is comments above..check'em out..

  21. Anonymous29.9.09

so troy's agenda is financial based. dirks is yet to be determined. same old same old. QUIT focusing on money! per cap cuts were good for the tribe. by re-raising per cap, the only thing that will be accomplished will be tribe being bled dry, tribal members refusing to work once again (have you ever seen so many tribal members in the workforce?!?), and little to no direction for the future of the tribe and the members of the tribe.

anyone, and i repeat anyone can "listen" to the people. the question remains, do you hear what they are saying.

    ReplyDelete
  22. troy,
raising the percap should not be an issue. you have to think long term and not just in the now. people are managing and i believe are realizing how much they took everything for granted. think of how many individuals were simply holding their hand out and not contributing anything to society or to the Tribe.

they had little to no direction in their lives as they assumed money would always be given to them. what would have happened to some of these individuals when they hit 65 and wanted to retire. they simply couldn't because they did not pay into the social security system through true employment. by working a J-O-B every citizen (tribal or non-tribal) contributes to the system to ensure those who wish to retire at 65 have something to fall back on.

the medicare costs are derived from taxes and FICA out of one's payroll. those tribal members who thought to sit back on their laurels were again not contributing to help control the costs of health care that those 65 and older (plenty of tribal members within this age category) consume. as people get older, they consume more and more health care costs. services not covered by medicare/medicaid all comes back on the tribe's bill. that is millions of dollars per year.

as far as financial aid and school. the opportunity has always existed, however this goes back to the initial point of tribal members not doing anything for themselves. with per cap cuts and limited job opportunities in a down-turning economy, tribal members realized a higher education would be beneficial. however, there are rules in place as higher education has a pre-determined budget and must adhere to these financial obligations. simply because they set deadlines for filing so they have an idea of how many students want to enroll for financial aid is not "red tape". again, they have limited funding and can't keep handing out funds when somebody decides at the last minute to go to school or fails to follow through (ie: laziness) with requested paperwork.

were you or someone close to you not funded and NOW you want changes. sounds like a personal agenda to me. not what is needed in tribal politics.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous29.9.09

    Makani,
Seriously why don't you stop spouting off on who you think should be in council. You remind me a white man from the outside trying to tell us how to run things. You have no vote or no say in any tribal politics or any aspect that goes on within the tribe. I notice this was already stated before as well. You want to be in politics so bad, focus on your own city/state and stay out of ours.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow Anonymous..why so angry? Yeah..i have no vote. But i do retain full tribal membership by birth and i have full political rights by birth. And are you the appointed one to try and shut people down? If i truly wanted to be in politics..i would have been there already. I am already involved on several levels in different states and cities, including Tama. What are you doing behind that facade, besides wandering the internet trying to tell people what to do? Try this..go thru all my posts and find one that is bad..not one you disagree with, but is bad..like no good..Ok?? lemme know what you find..(this oughta be interesting.) a hui hou!

Nobody is mentioning the name of Judith Bender or any other woman as a matter of fact. From what I have seen so far, Judith is very fair. Any one who attends the meetings will tell you that. I've been to a few and see that. As is Donald. I thought he would have a hidden agenda, but he doesn't. They are both truly there for the people. I hope both of these two run for council. They will definately have my vote! I hope more women run this time around. We need more ko-kos in the council!!!

Any one but the original walker or bear council members! Start new from a clean slate. We don't need any of this "clan leaders" bs in Tribal politics!! We need more veterans on this council, some college educated people, some women, someone you won't find at the local bars or casino lounge. Someone who is just not worried about MONEY!Lets put our extra money in preserving our language. Sell the bank and use that money to pave the settlement roads. Make an indoor swimming pool where our kids can swim all the time, not til 10pm like "our" casino did, to yield off our kids no doubt. The options are endless. Go west to the Prarie Band Potawatomis and see everything they did for their people. Go northeast to the Ho-chunk nation and see what they do for their people. Now come back to the Meskwaki Settlement and see what we don't have. We still depend on the U.S. Government. We are looking to them for funds to fix our pow wow grounds. I bet our ancestors are looking down at us, embarrased.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Them is some good points Anonymous! There are some "returnee" candidates trying to get on the Council again. But that is all up to the voters to determine who gets in. I, like you, would like to see some new and trusted faces. I like what some of the candidates posted here. Troy seems to be determined to make accountability an issue pertaining to the casino and tribal administration. Some might view him as all about the money..but I think he is focused more on accountability. How else do we get the things you mentioned like ohtre tribes? When he mentions the per cap ..I know he is talking about the whole idea that the referendum should be honored as the voice of the people. The Tribal Constitution is the SOLE basis of our tribal law..and if we were to let any person(s) walk on it they did with that particular referendum then how can we ever say we have to abide by the "law"? Adherence to the "people" voice is the issue here...not money.
Dirk has good ideas about technology and education as applied to preserving the language. He is a young person who I believe is making an honest and open attempt at doing something for the tribe. I know ther are some who will always differ on whon and what should be done..but dat is cool. I wish more would come out and say what they will do. But again, you do make some good points about different kinda people coming out and going for council. And yeah, that was a little embarassing about asking for $ from the State of Iowa. Their people are all outta work and that is THEIR tax money..wow shame li'dat!! Malo!

I agree in regards to it being up to the voters but many times ONE family will get behind one or two people to place them into office. From there, the personal agendas and "paybacks" begin to take fold. I truly hope this is what is not done this go round.

its easy for somebody who has a job with the tribe or is one of them that is always jumping from job to job..position to position..always the same people .....why not give other skins a chance at some jobs...one minute somebody is the jtpa director....next minute they running some other program....or one minute they in accounting ...next time you see them they in some other job...these are the councilmens favorites...always the same ripoffs..i even heard about one woman saying when introduced to some whiteman..she said.."im one of the more important members of the tribe'...such arrogance...all cuz they have jobs and can transfer to another at will..and i know some people who never can get a job with these people in charge....they protect each other.....hell with the other members......time to change this bullshyt..easy for people who have jobs to say..'get a job'........some of us out here are trying to get jobs..but never even get interviews...........maybe the way to go..is to start adopting your drunk relations kids ant live on welfare and the little kids percaps......i seen some these people hollering at the other members to get a job. such arrogance...

Earlier this decade the walker council, (yawn, here we go againg right?!) :) were in charge of the hiring of tribal employees. They chose who they wanted and most of the time it was their relatives, friends, supporters, etc.. The bear council (another yawn):) decided to change that and gave that power to the executive director. He shouldn't of had that much power. That is where the bear council went wrong in regards to the hiring practices of the tribe. This right should go to the department director and he/she should be the one held accountable for following indian preference. Maybe eliminate the executive director position and put a business manager in its place. Otherwise, why need department directors when the ED makes the decisions? Just a thought. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous7.10.09

Excellent points anonymous. I have heard of many stories where tribal members were overlooked because a relative or friend needed a job. (Look at the clinic secretary for a perfect example). This also takes place all the time at the school and even at the trading post. Tribal members overlooked. The heirarchy of tribal ops needs to be re-worked or looked at closely. Giving one person, ie: the executive director, all the power to make decisions in regards to hiring and other important aspects of tribal ops, is far too much power and control for one individual. We are not a Communistic society and it should not be allowed in any tribal operations.

There is one caveat to this and that is education. Sitting around bitching because you can't find a job or the tribe won't hire you can mean a couple of things. Are you qualified? Education? Work experience? Without the above, surely you will get looked over for just about any position. You or no tribal member is entitled to a job, it must be earned through education and/or previous work experience.

Most if not all organizations operate this way. They simply can not hire somebody off the street with little to no work experience or lack of education within the field they are hiring for. It would not be a sound business decision.

You have people who are educated and have the knownledge of the postion the person is in. I have seen many changes at the casino and trading post and still see white people doing the best thing they do best that is keep our people down. At the trading post you have a white woman that thinks she knows everything but she doesn't have a degree if that is what you are looking for. Just like many postions at the casino, many are there in sales & marketing with no degrees. How about that???

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous11.10.09

a few of our people have degrees in business ad and computer sciences and liberal arts and still are passed over for people who are not as qualified. these non qualified people usually are the ones related to the now ousted executive director. the last ten to fifteen years was an embarrassing period for the tribe when it came to nepotism-so blatant and arrogance ran rampant. glad its over and we cxan start over and see what we can accomplish with a new goverment. i for one am proud of all these people who have gone on to accomplish a secondary education. Nobody should be overlooked who has a degree. lets use these resources and put them to work. I for one am proud of our peoples accomplishments and not jealous of any of them. stop putting our people down and stop thinking the whiteman knows best...thats bullshyt defeatist type of thinking. This last tribal council was full of that kind of thinking and it makes me somewhat ill to watch as our elected leaders brownnose some whiteman who has them all fooled into thinking that without him, we will not succeed...just remember who it was who suggested we buy that company for a million dollars, just to have it fail...on a whitemans word...we put down a cool one mil..gawd damn ..what the phuc is the matter with you guys. one thing im betting is none of them indians did any kind of research on that company before they all put thier hands up to let loose of all that cash. all because a whiteman said it was kewl. phuc that makes me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see the point of using our educated people but that is not always the case as there some that can't get jobs and they are educated. I know of one person who has tried many times to get a job either with the tribe, casino and even the post but with no luck....this person don't even get a chance in the field they have a degree in. You have others that can jump from job to job or even have a postion created for them. Even the enrolled members that are half white with no degree and even got positive drug testing still has a job at the casino don't have a degree but is able to be a supervisor. What is up with that??? Where are our protectors of the tribe?? We even had a good caring person in the health care that our own people in higher postions did not like so they got rid of her...why?? because she knew her job and cared about the people. Let's get our heads out of our butts and start doing what is best for the tribe.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous12.10.09

Please have all your facts straight anonymous. Perhaps she did know her job and did care for the tribe, but she made a mistake that almost cost a tribal member their life. So while she was educated and cared, she lacked sound judgement when it came to life or death matters.

Regardless of who is gone and what has been done, it is now time to move forward. With potentially a new council (although the same old people running ie: homer, frank, deron, etc.) hopefully the tribe can move forward cohesively rather than with the blatant attacks of other tribal members. We shall see.

why do wwe have a white woman at the trading post deciding who to hire and not hire anyways. i see she only hires her white friends and her sons all worked there-her boys are convicts but they got to work there. She acts like she owns the place, i thought it was that little whiteman who decides the people to hire. this woman has no business hiring and firing anybody, of she wants to work there, then let her be a cashier and not in charge of denying skins employment. She finally started hiring indians when she was confrontted about indian preference by a member of the tribe one day. I saw this man ask her and the manager about it. She seemed pissed. Get rid of that bitch and put in an indian who will put indians to work. I heard she was having an affair with the manager, thats why she gets to do what she wants....must be true.

It doesn't matter who gets in. People will be complaining about this next council soon enough. I heard one person didn't want to run because he stated "I don't want anyone to hate me. You could be the most popular person in the world and by the time your term is done, your everybodys enemy." So true, so true. So choose who you want to hate in four years. HO-LA!! AYEEE..........

I hear that anonymous. It truly does not matter who gets in. If they can reverse per cap to X amount of dollars, the people will love them. If they do right and make correct business decisions (ie: not raising per cap and investing in the tribe's longevity), the people will simply hate and demand this or that.

From what I have noticed over the years is that many tribal members can never be happy. They cut down and bad mouth eachother to no end. They further cut down white, black, brown people as well. This is truly unfortunate as many of these people are the tribe's customers. Without them, the tribe would have very little today.

Why do they act this way towards others? To make themselves feel better, jealousy, hate? Who knows for sure, but individuals need to begin to look in the mirror and ask why.
