Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back(into politics)

Does anyone else feel this way? The somewhat peaceful existence of the Meskwakis has been disrupted yet again. (sigh) I have been forced to put aside my hesitancy to get involved in tribal politics and I'm sure there are others who feel the same. At the present time, our situation may seem bleak, but it is temporary. Don't give up hope! There are people going around with petitions, and others who trying to gather enough people for a quorum. The Tribe will finally (November 2009) have a decent tribal council. A decent tribal council whose sole concern will be that of the people's well-being. A decent tribal council that will heed the will of the people and once again secure financial stability for the tribal members.

  1. every tribal council has made poor decisions. i also believe every council in the future will also make poor decisions. are you perfect? have you never made a mistake?

we, as a people, elected them to guide and lead us. we put our trust in them. but, they take away per cap and now we no longer trust or respect them? this all comes down to money. money, money, money!! the root of all evils!!

what peaceful existence do you speak of? the fact that various tribal members are still having their per cap withheld is not peaceful in my mind. the fact that the last of the final issues of the Meskwaki Times were to rehash a one sided story and attack members of the Meskwaki Tribe. peace is a relative term. simply because money was flowing into tribal members hands (particularly yours) there was peace. had per cap not been cut, would you still be bloggin today? i highly doubt it or you would have plenty of blogs to share with us from the "peaceful" times. instead you shell out your close minded mindset that every decision the council has made is wrong. don't like it, run for council. take that challenge. then when you make a decision you believe is in the best interest of the tribe's longevity, i can blog about you and criticize your every decision.

i don't want to sound cynical because i enjoy and appreciate your opinion. however open your mind a little and look past the money, well invested or wasted. money will always come and go, the Meskwaki Tribe and the people will not.

  2. There has never been a tribal council who has spent millions on Attorneys till now.
There has never been a tribal council who has spent millions on Lobbyists till now.
There has never been a tribal council who has spent millions on 3 projects and starting the others while the tribe is still paying for the first project till now.
There has never been a tribal council who has repeatedly threatened banishment and disenrollment till now.
There has never been a tribal council who has devised many laws in the white ways till now.
There has never been a tribal council who has taken away health benefits till now.

Tribal Councils in the past has made errors, but never on the scale it is now.

Yes, we need new tribal council members as the ones on now have already proven they can’t manage the tribe’s affairs.

And no money is not evil it is only evil if you conceal the truth and using it wastefully.

Money spent wisely will benefit all members without any reduction in per caps.

  3. Sorry meskwaki.ndnd but I would have to agree with twister..There as never been a tribal council who have done so many things without tribal member approval as he listed until now.. at least when the Walkers were our Council they had referendum voting on issues that involved large topics or large amounts of cash..now these councils just take things into there own hands and make decisions that WE as tribal members have a right to vote on and they have the audacity to punish the Walkers for unproven hearsay..I am one who would like to see the Proof of the Walkers wrong doings..I haven't seen ONE bit of Proof! Give the Walkers back their Percap!! and Yes I still think about the Walkers and how they have been mistreated by our tribe..mainly by a certain group that want to stay blinded from the Truth!

uhhh, excuse me but the things this council-administration have done are not "mistakes". Mistakes you can back up on and "ooooops!" correct them. When misteps are presented with lies and concealment, they can be likened to crimes. In any other community/society these individuals would be gone already. What they did to sidestep the 'per cap' referendum was lawfully unfathomable. Trust? Trust is extended, yes. However, we have laws in place, such as the Tribal Constitution, and when they ignore it and do as they please, it spells trouble. It says "executive arrogance". I think if one were to look at the entire situation as a true 100% owner-participant of ALL of our Tribal affairs, it would present a clearer picture of why so many are upset over the conditions we see today. I personally would not be as vehement as some in opposition or remedy as some, but i do believe that the current leadership should back-up and repair what they can. In the least, they should not take any more actions that would divide the community more than it is.

  5. This council has not been making mistakes - they have been making sound business decisions that will only imporve and strengthen our financial and tribal futures. So many of you are so short sighted if not totally blind. You speak of this fall, finally getting a decent council in place. Are you serious? You won't like any council that does not cater to your every demand. You will not like any council that tries to move forward with our financial futures that do not include getting you all back you per cap at an amount that you decide. You make it sound like this fall's elections are a done deal. What have you been doing? Going around and making useless promises in order to get the council you feel will be sympathetic to YOUR needs and wants vs what is good for the tribe as a whole. Sometimes good decisions seem to hurt but that doesn't mean they are still not good decisions. You all need to climb out of your "me, me, me" shells and join the rest of us in the real world.
